Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You got a fast car.
Em chordEm D chordD
I want a ticket to anywhere.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
Maybe we make a deal,
Em chordEm D chordD
Maybe together we can get somewhere.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
Any place is better.
Em chordEm D chordD
Starting from zero, got nothing to lose.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
Maybe we'll make something,
Em chordEm D chordD
Me myself, I got nothing to prove.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD X2

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You got a fast car.
Em chordEm D chordD
I got a plan to get us out of here:
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
I been working at the convenience store,
Em chordEm D chordD
Managed to save just a little bit of money.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
Won't have to drive too far
Em chordEm D chordD
Just 'cross the border and into the city,
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You and I can both get jobs
Em chordEm D chordD
And finally see what it means to be living.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD X2

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You see, my old man's got a problem:
Em chordEm D chordD
He live with the bottle, that s the way it is.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
He says his body's too old for working,
Em chordEm D chordD
His body's too young to look like his.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD
My mama went off and left him, she wanted more from life than he could give,
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
I said, "Somebody's got to take care of him."
Em chordEm D chordD
So I quit school and that's what I did.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD X2

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You got a fast car.
Em chordEm D chordD
But is it fast enough so we can fly away?
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
We gotta make a decision:
Em chordEm D chordD
Leave tonight or live and die this way.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD X2

G chordG Em chordEm D chordD C chordC G chordG
So remember when: we were driving, driving in your car,
C chordC G chordG
The speed so fast I felt like I was drunk,
Em chordEm C chordC
City lights lay out before us
Em chordEm D chordD
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder.
C chordC Em chordEm D chordD
And I had a feeling that I belonged
C chordC Em chordEm D chordD Em chordEm G chordG Em chordEm
And I had a feeling I could -- be someone, be someone, be someone.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG Em chordEm D chordD X2

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You got a fast car.
Em chordEm D chordD
And we go cruising to entertain ourselves;
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
you still ain't got a job
Em chordEm D chordD
And I work in a market as a checkout girl.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
I know things will get better:
Em chordEm D chordD
You'll find work and I'll get promoted,
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
We'll move out of the shelter
Em chordEm D chordD
Buy a bigger house and live in the suburbs.

Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
You stay out drinking late at the bar,
Em chordEm D chordD
You see more your friends than you do your kids.
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
I'd always hoped for better,
Em chordEm D chordD
Thought maybe together you and me would find it,
Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 G chordG
I got no plans I ain't going nowhere,
Em chordEm D chordD
so take your fast car and keep on driving.

The following comment has been added to your tab : 'The main riff is Cmaj7 chordCmaj7, C chordC, Cmaj7 chordCmaj7, G5 chordG5 instead of just Cmaj7 chordCmaj7 and G chordG. This way you play the melody on the first string (A chordA string) by playing 2, 3, 2, 5 with the chords'

BeZo, that tune sounds great on the A string, but is there more to it to pluck?
A---2, 3,2,5,5,5 then, by my ear it goes A--10, 9, then back to 5 again?

I'm going to answer my question after careful research:
D-DU-UD D-DU-UD
CMAJ7: D-D
G: U-UD
(I play Emaj7 instead of e): DD

The main riff is Cmaj7, C, Cmaj7, G5 instead of just Cmaj7 and G. This way you play the melody on the first string (A string) by playing 2, 3, 2, 5 with the chords

About this song: Fast Car

The Fast Car Songfacts says: When the then unknown Tracy Chapman was booked to appear down the bill at the Nelson Mandela birthday concert at Wembley Stadium on June 11th 1988, little did she know her appearance would be the catalyst for a career breakthrough. After performing several songs from her self titled debut during the afternoon, Chapman thought she'd done her bit and could relax and enjoy the rest of the concert. However, later in the evening Stevie Wonder was delayed when the computer discs for his performance went missing, and Chapman was ushered back onto stage again.
