Oh Isabella, Proud Isabella

All along the Navaho Trail

burnouts stub their toes on garbage pails

Waitresses crying in the rain

Will their boyfriends pass this way again?

So all you critics sit alone

With your stomach pump and your hook and ladder dreams
Am Am Em Em D D
We could get together for some scenes

G G
Well I'm up in T.O. keepin' jive alive
Am Am
and out on the corner it's half past five
Bm Bm C C
But the subways are empty and so are the cafes
G G D D
Except for the Farmer's Market and I can still hear him sayin'
C C F F
"You're all just pissin' in the wind
Am Am Em Em D D
You don't know it but you are"
C C F F
And there ain't nothing like a friend
Am Am Em Em D D
Who can tell you you're just pissin' in the wind

G G
I never knew a man could tell so many lies
Am Am
he had a different story for every set of eyes
Bm Bm C C
How can he remember who he's talking to?
G G D D G G(hold)
Cause I know it ain't me and I hope it isn't you

About this song: Ambulance Blues

"Ambulance Blues" closes the album "On the Beach". The melody 'unintentionally' quotes Bert Jansch's "Needle of Death." In a 1992 interview for the French "Guitare & Claviers" magazine, Young discussed Jansch' influence: "...as for acoustic guitar, Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi (Hendrix). That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by "Needle of Death", such a beautiful and angry song. That guy was so good... And years later, on On the Beach, I wrote the melody of "Ambulance Blues" by styling the guitar part completely on "Needle of Death".
