Capo on 1 + Strumming pattern D-D-U-U-D-U-D works very well

That's because it is not meant for a strumming pattern. It's played with an arpeggio.
I play it like this: *3rd string - 2nd - 1st- 2nd - 3rd - 3rd* Change note and repeat.
