Vincent

G G Am Am
Starry starry nights, paint your palette blue and grey
C C D7 D7 G G
Look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Am Am
Shadows on the hills, sketch the trees and the daffodils
C C D7 D7 G G
Catch the breeze and the winter chills, in colours on the snowy linen land

Am Am D7 D7 G G Em Em
Now I understand what you tried to say to me
Am7 Am7 D7 D7 Em Em
How you suffered for you sanityHow you tried to set them free
A7 A7 Am7 Am7 D7 D7 G G
They would not listen they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now

G G Am Am
Starry starry nights, flaming flowers that brightly blaze
C C D7 D7 G G
Swirling clouds in violet haze reflect in Vincent's eyes of chine blue
Am Am
Colours changing hue, morning fields of amber grain
C C D7 D7 G G
Weathered faces lined in pain are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand

Am Am D7 D7 G G Em Em
Now I understand what you tried to say to me
Am7 Am7 D7 D7 Em Em
And how you suffered for your sanityHow you tried to set them free
A7 A7 Am7 Am7 D7 D7 G G
They would not listen they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now

Am7 Am7 D7 D7 G G
For they could not love you, but still your love was true
Em Em Am7 Am7 Cm Cm
And when no hope was left in sight, on that starry starry night
G G F7 F7 E7 E7 Am7 Am7
You took your life as lovers often do, but I could have told you, Vincent,
C C D7 D7 G G
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

G G Am Am
Starry starry nights, portraits hung in empty halls
C C D7 D7 G G
Frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Am Am
Like the strangers that you've met, the ragged men in ragged clothes
C C D7 D7 G G
A A silver thorn, a bloody rose, lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Am Am D7 D7 G G Em Em
Now I think I know what you tried to say to me
Am7 Am7 D7 D7 Em Em
And how you suffered for your sanity and how you tried to set them free
A7 A7 Am7 Am7
Would not listen they're not listening still
D7 D7 G G
Perhaps they never will

About this song

"Vincent" is a song by Don McLean written as a tribute to Vincent van Gogh. It is also known by its opening line, "Starry Starry Night", a reference to van Gogh's painting The Starry Night. The song also describes different paintings done by the artist. McLean wrote the lyrics in 1971 after reading a book about the life of the artist. The following year, the song became the number one hit in the U.K. and No. 12 in the U.S.
