Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I fell in love with a Mexican girl
Am baritone chordAm
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Music would play and Felina would whirl

Am baritone chordAm
Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
Am baritone chordAm
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I was in love but in vain I could tell

C baritone chordC F baritone chordF C baritone chordC
One night a wild young cowboy came in
F baritone chordF G7 baritone chordG7
Wild as the West Texas wind

Dashing and daring a drink he was sharing
C baritone chordC
With wicked Felina the girl that I loved

D7 baritone chordD7
So in anger I
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Challenged his right for the love of this maiden
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore
Am baritone chordAm
My challenge was answered in less than a heartbeat
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor

Am baritone chordAm
Just for a moment I stood there in silence
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done
Am baritone chordAm
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I had but one chance and that was to run

C baritone chordC F baritone chordF C baritone chordC
Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran
F baritone chordF G7 baritone chordG7
Out where the horses were tied

I caught a good one it looked like it could run
C baritone chordC
Up on its back and away I did ride

D7 baritone chordD7
Just as fast as I
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Out to the bad-lands of New Mexico

Am baritone chordAm
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Everything's gone in life nothing is left
Am baritone chordAm
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
My love is stronger than my fear of death

C baritone chordC F baritone chordF C baritone chordC
I saddled up and away I did go
F baritone chordF G7 baritone chordG7
Riding alone in the dark

Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me
C baritone chordC
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart

D7 baritone chordD7
And at last here I
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Am baritone chordAm on the hill overlooking El Paso
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I can see Rosa's cantina below
Am baritone chordAm
My love is strong and it pushes me onward
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Down off the hill to Felina I go

Am baritone chordAm
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Off to my left ride a dozen or more
Am baritone chordAm
Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I have to make it to Rosa's back door

C baritone chordC F baritone chordF C baritone chordC
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
F baritone chordF G7 baritone chordG7
A baritone chordA deep burning pain in my side

Though I am trying to stay in the saddle
C baritone chordC
I'm getting weary unable to ride

D7 baritone chordD7
But my love for
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest
Am baritone chordAm
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest

Am baritone chordAm
From out of nowhere Felina has found me
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side
Am baritone chordAm
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for
D7 baritone chordD7 G baritone chordG
One little kiss and Felina good-bye

About this song: El Paso

This video clip contains live concert footage of Marty Robbins performing his hit song "El Paso". The classic Ballad was first released in 1959 on the "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" album, and went on to win a Grammy Award in 1960. Unfortunately the important verses explaining why the first person narrator of the song must stay away from Fellina (the Mexican girl who is the love of his life) are not included in this clip.
