Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
Nighttime would find me in Rosa's Cantina,
G7 baritone chordG7 C baritone chordC F baritone chordF|C baritone chordC
Music would play and Felina would whirl.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
Black as the night were the eyes of Felina,
G7 baritone chordG7 C baritone chordC F baritone chordF|C baritone chordC
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
My love was strong for this Mexican maiden,
G7 baritone chordG7 C baritone chordC F baritone chordF|C baritone chordC
I was in love, but in vain I could tell.
F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb C7 baritone chordC7
One night a wild young cowboy came in, wild as the West Texas wind...
C7 baritone chordC7
Dashing and daring, a drink he was sharing,
F baritone chordF
With wicked Felina, the girl that I love.
G baritone chordG G7 baritone chordG7 C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm G7 baritone chordG7
So in an - ger I challenged his right for the love of this maiden;
C baritone chordC
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
Dm baritone chordDm
My challenge was answered, in less than a heartbeat
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.
Dm baritone chordDm
Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Shocked by the foul evil deed I had done.
Dm baritone chordDm
Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there;
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
I had but one chance and that was to run.
F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb C7 baritone chordC7
Out through the back door of Rose's I ran, out where the horses were tied...
C7 baritone chordC7
I picked a good one; he looked like he could run,
F baritone chordF
Up on his back and away I did ride.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
Just as fast as I could from the West Texas town of El Paso,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Out thru the badlands of New Mexico.
Dm baritone chordDm
Back in El Paso my life would be worthless;
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Everything's gone in life nothing is left.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
But it's been so long since I've seen the young maiden,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
My love is stronger that my fear of death.
F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb C7 baritone chordC7
I saddled up and away I did go, riding alone in the dark...

Maybe tomorrow a bullet may find me,
F baritone chordF
Tonight nothing's worse than this pain in my heart.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
And as last here I am on the hill overlooking El Paso,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
I can see Rose's Cantina below.
Dm baritone chordDm G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
My love is strong and it pushes me onward, down off the hill to Felina I go.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
shouting and shooting; I can't let them catch me,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
I've got to make it to Rose's back door.
F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb F baritone chordF Bb baritone chordBb C7 baritone chordC7
Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel a deep burning pain in my side...

It's getting harder to stay in the saddle.
F baritone chordF
I'm getting weary, unable to ride.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen;
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Though I am weary, I can't stop to rest.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
>From out of nowhere, Felina has found me,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
C baritone chordC Dm baritone chordDm
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
G baritone chordG C baritone chordC
One little kiss and Felina goodbye.

Question

About this song: El Paso

This video clip contains live concert footage of Marty Robbins performing his hit song "El Paso". The classic Ballad was first released in 1959 on the "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" album, and went on to win a Grammy Award in 1960. Unfortunately the important verses explaining why the first person narrator of the song must stay away from Fellina (the Mexican girl who is the love of his life) are not included in this clip.
