I think this sounds best alternatively strumming the C and A strings while changes finger positions to the ones listed here, then transitioning to a strum and then picking starting at 'My father wasn't around'... if that makes any sense to anyone.

@transthot the strumming pattern can just be down down or you can do a four shring pluck to make it sound like the piano
