C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Met my old lover in a grocery store
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
The snow was falling Christmas eve
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
And I touched her on her sleeve
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She didn't recognize the face at first
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
But then her eye flew open wide
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
And we laughed until we cried.

C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She took her groc'ries to the check-out stand
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
The food was totaled up and bagged
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
As the conversation dragged
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Went to have ourselves a drink or two
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
But couldn't find and open bar
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Bought a six-pack at the liquor store
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
And we drank it in her car.

Refrain:
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
We drank a toast to innocence
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
We drank a toast to now
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
G baritone chordG
But neither one knew how.

C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She said she married her an architect
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She would've liked to say she loved the man
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
But she didn't like to lie.
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
I said the years had been a friend to her
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
And her eyes was still as blue
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
Saw a doubt of gratitude.
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She said she saw me in the record stores
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
And that I must be doing well
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
I said the audience was heavenly
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF
But the travelling was hell.

Refrain:
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
We drank a toast to innocence
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
We drank a toast to now
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
G baritone chordG
But neither one knew how.
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
We drank a toast to innocence,
G baritone chordG Am baritone chordAm
We drank a toast to time.
Am baritone chordAm F baritone chordF
Reliving in our eloquence
G baritone chordG pause
Another "auld lang syne."

C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
And running out of things to say
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
D baritone chordD F baritone chordF G baritone chordG
And I watched her drive away
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
Just for a moment I was back in school
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
And felt that old familiar pain
C baritone chordC Am baritone chordAm
And as I turned to make my way back home
FM7/G baritone chordFM7/G-G baritone chordG
The snow turned into rain.

About this song: Same Old Lang Syne

According to the Same Old Lang Syne Songfacts, as Fogelberg tells it on his official website, the song is totally autobiographical. He was visiting family back home in Peoria, Illinois in the mid-'70s when he ran into an old girlfriend at a convenience store. After Fogelberg's death from prostate cancer in 2007, the woman who he wrote the song about came forward with her story. Her name is Jill Greulich, and she and Fogelberg dated in high school when she was Jill Anderson. Read more on Last.fm.
