C C Am Am
Met my old lover in a grocery store
C C Am Am
The snow was falling Christmas eve
C C Am Am
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
D7 D7 FM7 FM7 G G
And I touched her on her sleeve
C C Am Am
She didn't recognize the face at first
C C Am Am
But then her eye flew open wide
C C Am Am
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
D7 D7 FM7 FM7 G G
And we laughed until we cried.

Interlude: (Do intro chords)

C C Am Am
She took her groc'ries to the check-out stand
C C Am Am
The food was totaled up and bagged
C C Am Am
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
D7 D7 FM7 FM7 G G
As the conversation dragged
C C Am Am
Went to have ourselves a drink or two
C C Am Am
But couldn't find and open bar
C C Am Am
Bought a six-pack at the liquor store
D7 D7 FM7 FM7 G G
And we drank it in her car.

Refrain:
Am Am F F
We drank a toast to innocence
G G Am Am
We drank a toast to now
Am Am F F
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
G G
But neither one knew how.

(2nd Verse Chords)
She said she married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would've liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie.
I said the years had been a friend to her
And her eyes was still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I
Saw a doubt of gratitude.
C C Am Am
She said she saw in the record stores
C C Am Am
And that I must be doing well
C C Am Am
I said the audience was heavenly
D7 D7 F F
But the travelling was hell.

Refrain:
Am Am F F
We drank a toast to innocence
G G Am Am
We drank a toast to now
Am Am F F
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
G G
But neither one knew how.
Am Am F F
We drank a toast to innocence,
G G Am Am
We drank a toast to time.
Am Am F F
Reliving in our eloquence
G G pause
Another "auld lang syne."

(2nd Verse Chords)
The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away
Just for a moment I was back in school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
FM7-G
The snow turned into rain.

About this song: Same Auld Lang Syne

According to the Same Old Lang Syne Songfacts, as Fogelberg tells it on his official website, the song is totally autobiographical. He was visiting family back home in Peoria, Illinois in the mid-'70s when he ran into an old girlfriend at a convenience store. After Fogelberg's death from prostate cancer in 2007, the woman who he wrote the song about came forward with her story. Her name is Jill Greulich, and she and Fogelberg dated in high school when she was Jill Anderson.
