[INTERLUDE]
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday

[VERSE 1]
    Bm
The words of the prophet
     Em Bm
were simple and plain
    Bm
And yet to the learned,
   Em F#7
he sounded insane.
   Em
He asked for repentance
   Bm
to all who have sinned
      Em
Not a reed simply swayed
       F#7
by the wind

[VERSE 2]
    Bm
And when the Messiah's
     Em Bm
turn came to pass,
    Bm
The Savior was cursed
       Em F#7
by the same petty class.
     Em
They said John had a demon,
   F#7
he tasted no wine.
    Em
And Christ was a glutton,
     F#7 Bm
with drunkards, He dined.

[INTERLUDE]
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday

[CHORUS 1]
      Em
Their lines were not cute
          Em B7
nor their gestures or voice
     Em
They played with the flute
        B7
but the crowd won't rejoice
    Am
The watchmen had sounded
      Em
their trumpets to warn
     Am
They chanted a dirge
B7 Em F#7
but the people didn't mourn.

[INTERLUDE]
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday

[VERSE 3]
    Bm
In Jesus's tradition
    Em Bm
His followers preached,
    Bm
The world's destitution,
     Em F#7
They touched and they reached.
    Em
But two thousand years
      Bm
never changed it a bit
    Em
The old and the same
      F#7
marketplace.

[VERSE 4]
      Bm
We're looking for miracles,
Em Bm
wonders and signs
      Bm
For a marvelous spectacle,
   Em F#7
we fall in line.
    Em
For silver and gold
         Bm
and fine raiment and fame
   Em
As though they were a prize
     F#7 Bm
in a spiritual game.

[INTERLUDE]
Bm F#m Bm
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday
Bm F#m Bm B7
Day-daday, Day-da-dayday

[CHORUS 2]
      Em
We're deaf and we're mute
       Em B7
and we gave them no chance
     Em
They fiddled the flute
         B7
but then nobody danced
        Am
They're true to their words
          Em
and their pledges they kept
     Am
They sang in a dirge
    B7 Em F#7
but nobody wept.
