Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
E baritone chordE A baritone chordA
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
In this room the heat pipes just cough
D baritone chordD
The country music station plays soft

But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind.

A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
In the empty lot where the ladies play blind man's bluff with the key chain
D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
And the allnight girls, they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train
E baritone chordE
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
A baritone chordA
Ask himself if it's him or them that's realy insane
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
Louise, she's allright, she's just near
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
D baritone chordD
But she just makes it all too concice and too clear
A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7
That Johanna's not here
A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place.

A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
E baritone chordE A baritone chordA
And when bringing her name up He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
He's sure got a lotta gall
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
to be so useless and all
D baritone chordD
Muttering small talk at the wall
A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7
while I'm in the hall
A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
How can I explain? Oh, it's so hard to get on
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn.

A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial
D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
E baritone chordE A baritone chordA
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues You can tell by the way she smiles
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
See the primitive wallflower freeze
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
When the jellyfaced women all sneeze
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeeze, I can't find my knees"
A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
But these visions of Johanna they make it all seem so cruel.

The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him

Sayin' "Name me someone that's not a parasite

and I'll go out and say a prayer for him." But like Louise

always says, "Ya can't look at much, can ya man?" As she, herself, pre

And Madonna, she still has not showed
D baritone chordD D baritone chordD
We see this empty cage now corrode
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7
On the back of the fish truck that loads While my conscience explodes
A baritone chordA D baritone chordD E baritone chordE A baritone chordA
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
D baritone chordD A baritone chordA E7 baritone chordE7 A baritone chordA
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain.
