This took me a few weeks to figure out, but here is the best way to ply the E chord.

Usually, tabs will tell you to play the E chord with

but I find that the easiest way is to take your first finger on the top string, 2nd fret, and cover the other three strings with your third finger on the fourth fret:

It might take some getting used to, but I find that using only two fingers on a chord is much easier than having to use a third or fourth, even if you  have to bend your third finger in what may seem like an uncomfortable way at first. But once you get use to it, it's great. And, once you've mastered that, you can easily slide up and down the instrument with the same fingers to play other major chords in higher positions. For example, the Gmaj chord in second position can be played with

using the same fingers.
