The E Chord

Postby shugabella » 10 Aug 2012, 19:58

I thought I might as well start this thread only cuz I've seen this Question asked on the Facebook page like a million times and I thought it would be nice to have it here also.

How do you do the E Chord?

When I first started I did it 2444 using my ring finger to bar the top 4 and my index for the second. But then I found I prefered the sound of 2041 better. although it IS a stretch.

So what's your prefered way to do an E chord?

I do the 2444 method. Usually when I play songs for an audience they always say "DO HEY SOUL SISTER!" and starting my E like that makes it easy for me to get the the B chord. So I just got used to the 2444

I prefer the bar, personally. It's easy enough for me. Besides, the stretch is so... stretchy. I do think it sounds nice, but not different enough for me to use it in lieu of the easy option (yeah I'm lazy, I know). Plus the easy transition to the B is quite nice.

Having said all this, choosing the stretch may be better for my flexibility in the long run. Maybe I should start doing it.

Oh god yes. Its a fun song and all but it goes old when I play it more than I play my own songs!

I've been a bassist for years, so it's not really a stretch for me to play the 1402 chord. It depends on the song I'm playing, but I can use either or. Some transition or sound better one way or the other. I just do what seems right.

The E chord is a horrible evil creation. Thank you for this solution!

Thats nice! Ukulele is my first instrument so everything is a stretch for me. :-)

I play the E in the 2444 formation, but use the pad of my ring finger to cover the 444 and my first finger to cover the 2. It took a little practice for chord changes but works really well for me. It's also easier to move from a D (with the middle finger covering the 222) to the E that way.

Like BeZo, it really depends on what I'm playing, but personally I'll usually opt for 1402. I play guitar also, where the frets are miles further apart, so it helps with both to opt for the 'stretch'.

I still have yet to decide: 2444 or 1402.

Check out this site: http://ukulelehunt.com/2009/04/22/e-chord-ukulele/ It covers 10 different ways to play the E chord. You should be able to find one that's comfortable for you.

Try this site --> http://ukebuddy.com/chord-finder

It has alternate fingering options for difficult chords. It also teaches you to tune by ear and helps you find chords that you heard, but can't name, and learn scales.

While I was teaching myself, this was a life saver...

When i first started playing the uke, i learned the E chord as 1x02 where i muted the second string by just resting my middle finger on it. A little while later i started playing it as 4442 which is just as easy. I think it all depends on what song you are playing and what chords are easier to switch to with whichever one

How about 4-4-4-7? That is quick and easy and a little bit more cheery! But the main thing is that it's EASY! THANK YOU CHARLIE MCDONNELL! :top:

Lol! I like 2041 for three exact opposite reason. :-) I love the E chord with two e notes instead of the usual one. It sounds less cheery.... But thats just me.

I just like using the easy version when there is a quick transition. Whenever there is an E chord used in the song, it seems to mock you by changing to a different chord quickly...or maybe that's just me.

Lol! I've had plenty of those moments. every other chord gets strummed like 6 beats but the E chord gets something ridiculous like half of a half of a beat. :)
