Playing the ukulele without chipping your nail

Postby mainhiaa » 05 Aug 2012, 00:04

Now because I am a girl and I like to paint my nails and etc. sometimes strumming the ukulele can ruin my nails but ive found a technique to not chip it. I like to cut my nails short but not too short. I paint my nails with gel polish (a.k.a shellac) it protects my nail and does not chip. if you have any other ideas on how to not chip your nails while playing, just comment below :)

I haven't tried the gel manicure (although it's totally on my list), but I've found that if you use a very strong clear top coat and re-apply every other day (or when you see issues), being sure to concentrate on the tip/edge of the nail, that helps keep things stuck down pretty well. Keeping nails short definitely helps too.

My favorite top coat right now is Sally Hansen's Diamond Strength nail hardener. It gives a really nice shine even to bare nails, dries pretty fast (although after a few months of frequent use, it starts to dry out a little and can goop up on you if you're not careful), and I get it at the grocery store, so that's convenient. No special trips or anything. It's not terribly expensive; about average for a bottle of nail polish.

Same to everything above, but also when my polish is only a day old or so, it tends to still be soft. Not soft enough to leave a fingerprint when pressed, but soft enough to chip or even just wear down from frequent rubbing very easily, especially when I play. So, normally, when I do my nails and want to practice playing, I strum with my knuckles instead of with my nail. It definitely saves my manicure for a couple of extra days. :)

Using a pick should really help. And, moreover, the sound appears to be brighter when using a pick :)

That said, be careful. You can't use just any pick on a uke - your usual guitar pick can damage a uke. Use a felt pick - they can be a little more expensive, but its worth the extra 50 cents to keep your uke from getting all scratched up.

Brittni Paiva uses a thumb pick, but it looks like she doesn't use polish and keeps her nails short.

She sure can wrangle a uke, though. Check out her music & new album

I paint my nails weekly and practice uke almost immediately after I'm dry. I find using Seche Vite as a topcoat works well for me :)

My nail polish chips so much from doing nothing its ridiculous! I Stopped painting my nails with color cuz they'd look ugly after one afternoon. I only use clear now and even that chips! but at least its less noticeable.... Yeah, i realize im no help. :)
