Love for the Dolphin!

Postby pootsie » 03 Aug 2012, 04:31

Anyone else on this forum who swims with a Dolphin?

Mine is a blue burst and I love it. Yes, it needed some set-up work straight from the factory and better strings, but don't you dare dis the dolphin!

i was THIS CLOSE to buying a dolphin, but i decided against it because for $20 more, i could get a nicer one. the thing with the dolphin is that it's fantastic for beginners, but sounds a little bit toy-ish to me :(

Still the uke I recommend for beginners on a budget. Set up well and with good strings the sound beats the competition (and many costing lots more) hands down. It's loud and rich sounding.

Despite me owning some ukes that cost $1000, I still gig my dolphin occasionally for fun. It stands up just fine.

Every uke collector should own one IMHO

I put aquila strings on mine and have not had any tuning issues at all.

I also needed to lower the nut and the saddle a bit.

But now it's all good!

I worried when I took a nice ukukle to work with me (unheated, uninsulated skate shack at an ice rink), and I had a credit at a local music store, so I got a Makala pineapple soprano with a Gator gig bag. A few years ago, I bought my youngest daughter an inexpensive 1/2 size guitar, but she learned piano instead. She gave her guitar to her niece, and one day when I was changing strings on the guitar, a tuner broke. A new tuner would cost more than a new guitar... I returned to the music shop and the Dolphins had come in, so I bought her a candy apple red one (sparkly!).

At the ice rink, the head of the skating school had two kids, 9-year-old son and 4-year old daughter. The son showed a real interest in the uke, so I showed him a few chords and he took to it quickly. He said his favorite color was green.

So I bought him a green one, with an instruction book. I became a pusher!

I later bought a blueburst, another candy apple red, a pearl white, and a black sparkle Dolphin. I sold the blue and red ones to boy scouts in a beginner uke class I helped teach. Still have the pineapple, the white, and the black Makalas.

Here's a photo of my ukes, including the two Dolphins I sold:

It's not to late. You can get help. You don't have to keep living this way, chasing your next dolphin fix every day xD

I got Chloe (my orange burst dolphin) from musicguymic shortly before he shut down, so with the setup she played great right from the get-go. She sounds plastic but not cheap, y'know? Kitschy and campy and fun. And louder than my Luna.

Plus dolphins are super utilitarian. The paint got a bunch of chips in it really fast, but the other day I picked her up for the first time in about 3 months (during which time I neglected to refill the humidifier) and, I kid you not, she was still right in tune. She is the low-maintenance wonder.

I got mine from a drop-ship seller on ebay for $45 with gig back and (crappy) electronic tuner. It needed good strings and some work to lower the nut and saddle.

Without that work and strings it was not so good, but luckily I was too ignorant to know how bad it was!

My (ex) blue burst Dolphin started chipping right after I sold it. No chips at all in either candy apple red, the pearl white, or the black sparkle (yet). I wonder if the "burst" finishes are prone to this?

My mom called this morning. She lives in Arizona, but my stepdad died a few years ago. She has friends, but due to an ailment she has recently needed to change much of her diet. She called to ask if we might make plans to have a small family reunion this spring. She could fly to Anaheim, get a motel room. My older daughter & her family (including three daughters -- oldest with the CAR Dolphin -- and a year-old son) live less than three miles from Disneyland. My youngest daughter lives in west LA while attending UCLA and she has a annual pass to Disneyland. My wife & I could drive down and we'd have a family day or two in the Disney resort. Sounds cool to me.

She said she felt like she had no goal. I understood, but also (while as good as a Disneyland family reunion sounds) the goal she set is too finite. She owns a piano and once tried piano lessons... I suggested the silliness of taking up ukulele. The nearest music store that carries ukes is 75 miles away. I suggested Amazon and type in Makala Dolphin. That the journey can take a lifetime and is better than the goal.

She just posted on Facebook she ordered a Yellow Burst Dolphin through Amazon from Sam Ash. And she is happy enough about this to add three exclamation marks to her announcement. So I ordered her two sets of Aquila strings, a Snark tuner, and two beginning Jumpin' Jim uke books. I think I will ship her an extra Gator gig bag I have.

I really have become an uke pusher...

That is awesome, Vibrocount. Mahalo button for you on that post

I assume Sam Ash does not give you a good set-up. You might want to ... Wait. No one needs to tell you about the care and feeding of a dolphin, right?

Oh hey, I've got one of those! Mine's the candy apple red colour. I don't really know much about ukuleles or stringed instruments in general so I can't really comment on whether it's overall good or not, but I certainly like it! It's plinky-plonky cute and though I expected it to go out of tune all the time (because it was almost the cheapest that the shop I went to had), it actually keeps its tune really really well.

So, love for the dolphin here also!

I have three for teaching my littlies: red burst, metallic blue, and pink burst. They're great, though I did need to add Aquilas and lower the nuts. I do have a hard time getting the strings to sound in tune past the fourth frets, but I haven't gotten my kids up there too much so it doesn't matter much yet. Any suggestions on getting consistent tuning along the whole fretboard?

I have two, but I did own two others at one point. So I've owned four total.
