I'm having trouble playing B minor (Bm) chord.

Postby Ukulele_Rat » 07 Aug 2012, 03:15

I'm practicitng a song, and it has the B minor chord in it. I can reach the fret, but when I try to fret any of CEA strings, they either buzz, or mute out.

Is there a position where I'm not muting any of the strings?
Or maybe finger exercises, to make my index strong enough to fret it?

If you aren't already doing this, try using your ring finger to hold the 4th on the G.

It takes a bit of work to get comfortable with this one.

When I was having trouble with it, some who know more than I do suggested barring the second fret with the index finger and bowing the ring finger over to the fourth fret on the G string.

The pinky just hangs out in mid-air, as does the finger that I use to compliment people on their driving skills.

Here is a short vid from Ukulele Mike with exercises to strengthen your barre technique:

Good luck!

I had someone tell me barring the 2nd fret would prevent the chord from "ringing" and to only bar CEA. I just smiled and nodded.

Well there is always more than one way to finger a chord. But barring it will only dampen the sound if you do it wrong.

Glad I could help, but I'm just passing along the aloha

Same here. Got unusually short fingers (therefore no piano career). I bar the CEA strings on the 2nd fret with the index, and do the reach-from-behind with my thumber to G on the 4th.

Oh you can totally play piano with tiny hands. I seem to manage. (and I assure you, they are tiny. It's one of the reasons I like the uke)

Pretty much all the B chords give me trouble. But I've been practising them and I think I'm just sort of getting the hang of it? For me it's a matter of having my hand positioned so I can reach far enough. The chord sounds funny if I'm straining to reach the fret on the top string.

If you're having trouble barring the strings hard enough to stop the buzzing, I recommend only barring the strings that are required, as opposed to all four. This helps you apply more pressure to the strings. Instead of leaving your middle finger in mid-air, you can use it to help your index finger to bar the three strings.

Hope that helped :)

When I have to do barre chords, i usually make sure my barring finger isn't completely 'facing' the fretboard. I barre with my finger at an angle (kinda between the front of your finger and the side of your finger) and that seems to help me to get a cleaner sound.
