Covering Songs With Guitar Solos

Postby BeZo » 20 Sep 2012, 18:47

What is the etiquette for playing a song that has a complex guitar solo that you have transcribed onto the ukulele? Do you learn the solo on the ukulele? Do you play the backing riff or bass riff and whistle the solo? Do you skip the solo part in the song? Do you simplify or create your own solo in place of the solo that was originally written for the song? Do you scream "GUITAR!" and stop the song looking for a guitarist, only to start the song again after the solo? Do you play it on the kazoo? What is the best route?

I just learned and tabbed out the Black Sabbath song Into The Void (shameless plug below) and I don't know what to do about the solo part. The song seems incomplete without the first solo part to transition into the ending. I can skip the outro solos and just do the stop part into the outro, but I need to figure out the first solo part. What should I do?

I try to make a mix of a chord solo and uke solo. I like to fill in the rhythm around the solo notes. But I've only tabbed ONE solo to a song were I did it note for note. I seriously lack the patience to do that now. so ill just do a ''version'' of the solo. Ive gotten too lazy to hit rewind over and over and get the right notes in the right order.

Ive also found sometimes the solo starts high and goes too low for the uke (as in lower than a low C), so i end up having to tweak the solo anyway...

It depends on the key and the arrangement. Quite often, you only have to find the corresponding notes on your uke and it will be ok. (see our tab to uke notes transposer or fretboard notes)

Sometimes, you need to re-arrange the solo to make it playable on your uke. For example, you will have problems picking notes at the 18th fret if your guitar solo has a many high notes like that.

In this case easiest thing to do is to transpose notes one octave lower (down 12 half steps). I'd say you should so this once you have at least one note played at the 12fret or below on your guitar.

But there's also another crucial point : a uke only has 4 strings and sometimes it's really complicated to keep the exact arrangement/phrases. Also, because C-string has the largest diameter, it's often not an option to transpose your solo using this string.

nb. one day you'll get the perfect tool to do this conversion on UT, there's already an interesting try available on the website (and we more or less know how to improve it), but you just don't have the time to do it now, we focus on other options. ;)
Never give up the uke fight.
